On the 24th August 2004, Cresco Trading Company officially opened the first ever Ben& Jerry's PartnerShop in Northern Ireland (and only the second of its kind outside of the USA). The day was celebrated with Daisy the cow and a free cone day at the shop, based in the Richmond Centre, Derry/Londonderry.
PartnerShops are Ben & Jerry's ice-cream scoop shops that are independently owned and operated by co
mmunity based non-profit organisations. It is a form of social enterprise, a growing movement in which non-profit organisations leverage the power of business for community benefit. Ben & Jerry's waive the standard franchise fees and provides additional support to help non-profits operate strong businesses.
In conjunction with the funding received under Peace II - Intermediate Labour Market project the PartnerShop offers supportive employment, job and entrepreneurial training to young adults that face barriers to employment. As PartnerShop operators, business proceeds are retained to support further programmes.
